The Miami Air Safety Management System

by Admin 10. August 2011

Throughout the history of airlines, safety standards and procedures were largely based on reaction – whenever an accident or incident occurred, procedures were put into place to prevent its reoccurrence. This has proven to be extremely effective; however, it is not a good system for preventing accidents in the first place.

That is why the FAA will soon require (as Part 5 to Code of Federal Regulations) all airlines to implement a Safety Management System (SMS). Although the SMS requirement is not scheduled to become law until August 2012, Miami Air International’s commitment to safety has put us ahead of the competition.

To prepare airlines and other FAA offices for the SMS requirement, the FAA started the SMS Pilot Program, which was designed to help airlines develop and implement an SMS under FAA mentorship. Miami Air International entered this program back in August 2008. The program is designed to be carried out in four stages: Planning, Implementation, Demonstration, and Continuous Improvement.

Of the 43 U.S. airlines enrolled in the SMS Pilot Program only 18 have completed the Planning stage, including Miami Air International. Completing the Planning stage represents a one to one-and-a-half year advantage over other airlines during a time when SMS implementation is still voluntary. By the time SMS becomes law, Miami Air International will have over three years of experience promoting and improving its SMS safety culture.

In maintaining this momentum, Miami Air International will have a well established SMS in place years before the rest of the aviation industry. This is an example of our commitment to the safety of our customers and employees and ensures that we are among the safest airlines in the nation.
